The governance of University of Galway is underpinned by the Universities Act 1997 as amended by the Higher Education Authority Act 2022 and the Code of Practice for the Governance of State Bodies 2016.  University of Galway is also a registered charity under the Charities Act, 2009 and must comply with the provisions of the Charities Governance Code.  Our Registered Charity Number (RCN) is 20002107.

The University also has important additional obligations under national legislation relating to ethics in public office and protected disclosures. It falls under the remit of the Office of the Ombudsman for the purposes of complaints in relation to the performance of its administrative functions.‌
